Nationals of the National Ocean Science Bowl

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership’s National Ocean Science Bowl is holding its national competition this weekend in St. Petersburg, Florida at the USF/St. Pete campus and FWRI. There is round robin competition on Saturday, then the finals will use a double-elimination tournament schedule that finishes up on Sunday.

I’m signed up as a moderator in one of the rooms on Saturday. I really enjoyed volunteering for the regional tournament, and I am looking forward to tomorrow’s competition.

We ran six rounds total today and saw some great match-ups between schools. One game was decided with just one point difference between the winner and the loser.

As a relatively new moderator, I think I did OK. I got several compliments and one “this bit needs work” comment. Together with the rest of the volunteer officials in our room, we managed to run most of our sessions in good time, and I was impressed with how dedicated everyone was.

Next year’s NOSB nationals will be held in Galveston, and I’m wondering if I can swing going to that.
