Rusty's Page

Rusty is a Harris' Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus). Her species is also known as the "baywing hawk". Rusty was trapped as a passage bird in 1991 in south Texas near Hebbronville. Since then, she has been a hunting partner for Diane Blackwood and I (Wesley Elsberry). Rusty is featured in the image that is used in the logo for this website. That picture was taken in the field near Santee, California on a day when we had already been out hunting ducks for a few hours. Rusty found a nice rock perch and spread her wings in the wind as the sun began to edge toward the horizon. Still, she kept her eyes open for silly rabbits popping out of their burrows.

We went out for a hawk walk here in San Diego recently with Rusty and two passage male Harris' hawks (Beater and Biter).
